Influencer Campaign Metrics What to Track

Why Vanity Metrics Are Misleading

Follower counts, likes, and view counts are the metrics most brands obsess over — and they're often the least useful for measuring actual campaign performance. A post can rack up 500,000 views and generate zero sales. A micro-influencer campaign with 12,000 views might drive 400 product purchases. The difference lies in how you define and measure success before the campaign launches, not after.

The Metrics That Actually Matter

  • Engagement Rate: (Likes + Comments + Saves + Shares) / Reach. A rate above 3% on Instagram or 5% on TikTok signals a genuinely engaged audience

  • Reach vs. Impressions: Reach = unique users who saw the content. Impressions = total views including repeat views. Both matter, but reach is the more meaningful awareness metric

  • Click-Through Rate (CTR): How many people clicked your link in bio, swipe-up, or story link. Benchmark: 0.5–3% is typical for influencer-driven traffic

  • Conversion Rate: Of those who clicked, how many completed the desired action (purchase, signup, download). Track this with UTM parameters and dedicated landing pages

  • Cost Per Acquisition (CPA): Total campaign spend divided by number of conversions. This is your north star metric for performance campaigns

  • Earned Media Value (EMV): The estimated dollar value of organic exposure generated by the campaign, useful for brand awareness campaigns without a direct conversion goal

Setting Up Proper Tracking

Every campaign should have unique UTM parameters in every tracked link. Create a dedicated discount code or landing page for each creator so you can attribute conversions accurately. Without this infrastructure, you’re flying blind and won’t be able to prove ROI to stakeholders or optimize for future campaigns.

Benchmarks by Platform

Instagram Reels: 3–6% engagement rate is strong. TikTok: 5–10% is average for mid-tier creators. YouTube integrations: 1–2% CTR on description links is typical. These benchmarks shift constantly — use them as directional guides, not hard targets.

Post-Campaign Reporting

Always compile a post-campaign report that covers reach, engagement, CTR, conversions, CPA, and qualitative insights (comment sentiment, brand mentions, creator feedback). This data is invaluable for refining your influencer selection criteria and brief quality on future campaigns.
